The definitions of the five types of spiritual liberation (salokya, samipya, sarupya, sarsti, and sayujya) and why a pure devotee rejects them.

Definitions of the Five Liberations

The scriptures define five types of liberation:
1. Sālokya: Being promoted to the planet where the Supreme Lord resides.
2. Sāmīpya: Remaining a personal associate of the Supreme Lord.
3. Sārūpya: Attaining a four-handed form exactly like that of the Lord (except for a few exclusive symptoms like the Śrīvatsa hair on the chest).
4. Sārṣṭi: Attaining opulences equal to those of the Supreme Lord.
5. Sāyujya: Merging into the Brahman effulgence of the Lord (impersonal liberation).

Why Pure Devotees Reject Liberation

A pure devotee does not accept these five kinds of spiritual existence, even if they are offered, and certainly does not hanker after material benefits.

When Prahlāda Mahārāja was offered boons, he stated: "My Lord, I have seen that my father achieved all kinds of material benefits... but still, in a second, You have finished his life. For a devotee, there is no question of desiring prosperity. He simply aspires to serve the Lord." That service is the devotee's highest happiness.
