Ekadashi

An examination of the biological, physiological, and astronomical reasons for fasting twice a month on Ekadashi.

Lunar Gravity & Atmospheric Pressure

Ekadashi is the 11th day in the lunar calendar. During the bright and dark fortnights, waves in the ocean rise high because the moon's gravitational pull attracts water. Since 90% of the human body is fluid, the moon has a strong influence on us. If we eat grains, they absorb water, increasing the chance of developing diseases due to gravity pull.

Research shows that atmospheric pressure is lowest on Ekadashi. Thus, it is the best time to fast and cleanse our systems. If we fast on other days, the high pressure may strain the body. Fasting on this day gives the machine of our body — specifically the stomach, liver, and bowel — a much-needed rest.

Physical & Spiritual Benefits of Fasting

Detoxification: Giving the digestive system a break helps eliminate toxins and promote cellular repair.
Digestion & Metabolism: Fasting stimulates digestive enzymes and improves gut health.
Willpower & Resilience: Voluntarily abstaining from food develops mental fortitude and discipline.
Mindfulness & Clarity: With energy diverted away from digestion, the mind experiences increased clarity and focus, facilitating deep meditation.

Fasting on Ekadashi leaves us with more time to engage in nama-bhajana (devotional service through chanting), nourishing our spiritual connection.
