Bhagavad Gita

How Lord Krishna teaches the process of surrender in the Bhagavad-gita, the obstacles like false pride, and scriptural role models.

Surrendering the Minute Independence

Lord Krishna's central message in the Bhagavad-gita is for us to surrender to Him. In Chapter 7, Text 14, He states:

daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayā
mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te

"This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who surrender unto Me can easily cross beyond it."

Most people are conditioned by the three modes of nature and fail to understand surrender. Four types of pious souls approach Krishna for benefits: the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and the searcher of knowledge. Through the association of pure devotees, they can become pure.

Conditions and Summary of Surrender

In Chapter 18, Text 66, Krishna concludes:

sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja
ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ

"Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear."

Surrender requires giving ourselves completely, trusting Krishna's protection under all circumstances, accepting all that is ordained, and following a bona fide spiritual master. Scriptural role models like Draupadi, Bali Maharaja, and Gajendra show us the path of total surrender.
