Gaura Purnima is the auspicious appearance day of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (who is also known as Gauranga due to His golden complexion). The Supreme Lord Sri Krishna appeared as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to establish Sankirtana (the collective chanting of the Holy Names) — the Yuga Dharma for this age of Kali.
He appeared on Phalguni Purnima, the full moon day in the month of Phalguna (Feb-March), in the year 1486 AD (1407 Shakabda) at Sridham Mayapura, as the son of Sri Jagannath Mishra and Srimati Sachidevi. His parents named Him Nimai since He was born under a nimba (neem) tree in the courtyard of His paternal house.
It is an auspicious start for the rest of the year, and we encourage devotees reading this to kindly consider donating on this day.
The Supernatural Birth
Lord Chaitanya appeared first in the heart of Jagannath Mishra and was then transferred to the heart of Mother Sachi. He stayed for 13 months in the womb of Mother Sachi. When Nilambara Chakravarty, Sachi's father and a renowned astrologer, was asked about the delay, he predicted that the delivery would take place at the perfect astrological moment.
When Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu appeared, He was a golden-colored baby, and Jagannath Mishra was overjoyed. Heavenly demigoddesses came from the celestial planets disguised as brahmanis to take darshan of Gauranga and offer prayers to this Kali-yuga avatar.
"Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare"
The Purpose of His Descent
The primary reason for Lord Gauranga's descent was the prayer of Advaita Acharya, who worshipped his Shaligram Sila with Tulasi manjaris and cried out loudly for Krishna to descend and deliver the fallen souls of Kali-yuga through Prema Bhakti.
Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came to distribute the highest spiritual nectar — Krishna Prema — freely to all without distinction. He did not appear just for a specific group or country; His name is *Vishwambhara* (one who maintains the universe), and He appeared for the liberation of the entire universe. Chanting the names of Lord Hari is the source of unlimited bliss (*anander sima nai*).
